Solving the World's Problems

Three eager, young minds ready to take on the world for Christ after an evening worship service at Buccleuch. Actually, we were all ready to go home and get some grub to eat! Priorities?!

This past Lord's Day (23 April) was the first time back in Buccleuch in over two months. The inside of the church underwent an entire refurbishment. I will try to post some pictures shortly. Needless to say, the renovation work looks fantastic!

Our senior minister Alex MacDonald preached a timely and penetrating sermon on the theme of God's restoration grace. His text was aptly chosen for the occasion from Psalm 23:3, "He restoreth my soul."

Craigmillar Castle

These pictures were taken on our recent excursion to Craigmillar Castle – just three miles southeast of Wee Gifford Park! Craigmillar is one of the finest preserved late medeival castles in Scotland, although it is overshadowed by its bigger brother in Edinburgh.

The earliest part of the castle was built in the early 15th century with later additions in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was sometimes used as a peaceful ‘get away’ residence for Mary Queen of Scots. It was here that the earl of Bothwell signed the infamous 'Craigmillar bond' with other nobleman that led to the murder of Queen Mary’s second husband, Lord Darnley.

On another note, the year before the Glorious Revolutation in 1688, a Presbyterian church was formulated on the premise of the castle. For more information about Craigmillar Castle, click here.

One of the great things about Edinburgh is how quickly you can get out of the city. Though we live in city centre, we are only 5 minutes walk from Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat. Here are some shots we took today.

Our entryway. Most flats in Edinburgh are designed this way. When you walk in you enter a main hallway and all rooms lead off of that hallway. Every room has a door and can be closed off. Heating purposes I suppose! We heat the room we are in.

Christmas in Edinburgh 2005

Every December the City of Edinburgh sets up a German Market in the Princes Street Gardens. They sell German food and crafts. The festival is complete with a ferris wheel, ice skating rink, and several other little rides.

The Princes Street Gardens lie at the base of the Edinburgh Castle. It is quite a site to be seen.

In the picture Princes Street is on the left, the tall spire is the Sir Walter Scott Monument and the building on the far right is the Balmoral Hotel.

Below is a picture of New College and the City of Edinburgh Christmas Tree.

New College is where John is studying for his PhD. It is located on The Mound beside the Edinburgh Castle and above the Princes Street Gardens.

Below is a picture of the Christmas Festival from the Edinburgh Castle.

You can see New College and the Christmas tree on the Right side of the picture, the Princes Street Gardens in the lower left and in the distance you can see Calton Hill (in the center of the picture) and the North Sea.
